A Letter to Arne Duncan

Posted in Uncategorized by Nicole Conaway on May 12, 2011

Hats off to Sabrina of  failingschools.wordpress.com for her May 2 post: A Letter to Arne Duncan.

Sabrina points out Duncans lack of qualification as an educator and his complicity in the educational “deforms” aimed at privatization and profit for billionaires.

My only disagreement – Sabrina asks Duncan when teachers will recieve his apology letter for the disrespect he has shown us. I don’t want an apology letter from him. I want a resignation letter!

This isn’t a personal attack, but a professional observation as an educator and a political assessment that the best thing Arne Duncan could do for US education would resign. He knows what he is doing, which is implementing the plan for the degredation and privatization of public education, putting in place policies created by those who don’t want to have fully-funded equal, quality public education for all, and just want more money for themselves

This is not a time for personal attacks ‘ on the hands that feed or have control’; but rather a time for communication and EDUCATION of those in power by those “in the trenches”. I believe that Arne Duncan and others may be well-meaning and educable but simply uninformed. After all, Catherine Ferguson Academy is very unusual in the LIFE-GIVING services it provides that nurture exponentially their women, children and thereby community!
I am a DOULA, pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum support person, working with DOULAS CARE, an organization that matches certified, volunteer doulas with highneed clients. My Detroit, teen client would have dropped out of school for ceretain, without Catherine Ferguson. WITH Catherine Ferguson she learned much-needed parenting skills and skills to make her a contributing member of society and a valued adult.
